If kept in good condition, a stone floor can make your interior an elegant, warm space. But should you fail to have dirt, dust, and spills cleaned up regularly, you could end up permanently damaging your expensive flooring.
Here at ICE Cleaning, we offer specialist stone floor cleaning services. Our technicians can clean, repair, refurbish, and maintain a range of different natural stones including marble, limestone, porcelain, slate, and granite.

Why you should keep your stone floor clean
A clean floor is essential to creating a safe and hygienic indoor environment. People can bring dust, bacteria, pollutants, and allergens in on their shoes which settle on the floor and put people’s health at risk. Dirty flooring could also lower the air quality in your home.
Accumulating grime and heavy foot traffic can damage your flooring and lead to cracks, too, putting people at risk of tripping and falling. Stone floors are particularly vulnerable and can very easily get damaged through everyday use:
- Grit and sand tracked in or blown in from outside might dent and scratch the finish
- Everyday spills like coffee, fruit juice, and red wine can damage and discolour the stone
- Oily foods that are spilled could penetrate the sealant and leave oily patches
Regular spills, scratches, and the build-up of dirt can leave the stone looking dull, fill the grout with unsightly grime, and even wear the sealant. This leaves it at risk of more serious damage.
Why you should not attempt to clean it yourself
Although there are lots of products and DIY methods you can use to restore the finish of your flooring, you should always leave cleaning stone floors to professionals.
Firstly, natural stone is very delicate and each different type requires a unique cleaning method. For example, marble, limestone, and travertine must not be cleaned with acidic products. Certain tools can also scratch the surface, such as using an old, worn vacuum cleaner to hoover it.
You can – and should – regularly sweep your floor to remove any dirt and dust, and blot up spills as soon as they happen. But it is recommended you bring in professional stone floor cleaners to do the more intensive cleans.
Cleaners, like ICE Cleaning’s technicians, have the training and experience to use the right stone cleaning solution and techniques for your floor. They will deep clean the stone including removing stains and polishing the surface, cleaning out the grout, carrying out repairs, and resealing your floor.
When should you have your stone floor cleaned?
There are lots of signs that you should bring in professional stone floor cleaners:
- The grout in low traffic areas, like by cabinets and cupboards, is a different colour to the rest of your flooring
- Your tiles are looking very dull due to the build up of dirt, residue, and scratches
- The sealant is starting to wear off, such as becoming loose or unstuck
- The flooring is stained or discoloured
If you are selling the property, it is recommended you have it professionally cleaned to restore it to pristine condition, too.
How to maintain your stone floor
There are lots of ways you can keep your floor spotless and in good condition between professional cleans.
- Use doormats so people don’t bring in grit, sand, and dirt on their shoes
- Sweep floors frequently so grit, sand, and dirt will not be trodden into the stones
- Protect the floor with mats and rugs to minimise heavy traffic
- When you mop the floor, use soft brushes or pads and don’t use too much water
- Blot spills immediately to prevent staining – don’t wipe, as this may spread the stain
- Don’t use abrasive cleaners and materials, like vinegar, steel wool, and scrub pads, or you could scratch the surface of the floor
