What causes mould?

To make sure the mould in your home does not come back, you need to identify what is causing it specifically and then tackle that issue.

Mould is a type of fungus that grows in environments that contain organic materials, moisture, and oxygen. The most common causes of mould include:

  • Penetrating and rising damp
  • High humidity which leads to condensation, mainly on walls and windows
  • Steam produced when washing and cooking
  • Leaks, such as from your roof or plumbing
  • Flooding that is not cleaned up within 24-48 hours
  • Poor ventilation and air circulation

Mould spreads by releasing spores that are carried on the air and settle in other parts of a property that contain the conditions it needs to grow. It can quickly spread around your home if the conditions are right.

What are the effects of mould growth?

Mould can have serious consequences, most notably health problems. It produces allergens and irritants which can trigger allergic reactions like sneezing, coughing, and runny noses.

But some also release mycotoxins – toxic chemicals which can lead to more serious health problems like sick building syndrome. Certain people are very vulnerable to mould like those with respiratory problems, skin conditions, and a weakened immune system.

Mould can be destructive, too. As it grows on organic materials, it can compromise some kinds of fabric and building materials. Quick, thorough mould removal is essential.

How to remove mould

To get rid of mould for good, you need to remove all traces of the mould from your find, and then actively find ways to prevent it. For that reason, it is recommended you always bring in professionals for mould remediation.

The mould removal methods suggested online like spraying the area with vinegar or scrubbing it with a mould remover are often not that effective. Mould can also grow in difficult-to-reach areas you might not be aware of or able to clean. Any mould left behind will simply grow back.

Just as it is dangerous to be exposed to, mould is hazardous to clean. Scrubbing vigorously can encourage it to release spores which you could inhale. You are more likely to touch and inhale the mould as you clean it unless you are wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), too.

The wrong cleaning method could damage the surface you are cleaning, as well, which could make the situation worse, such as damaging clothing fibres. You could even make the mould worse by “washing” the mould, for example, which will just spread it around the area.

Professional mould cleaners will have the training, specialist equipment, and PPE to remove all the mould safely and carefully from your home. They will know how to remove mould permanently and can give you peace of mind that your property is safe again.

How to prevent mould

Once you have identified what is specifically causing mould in your home, simply correct the issue and this should stop the mould coming back. However, it can still crop up in other areas of the home. To keep your property mould-free, try the following preventative measures:

  • Keep humidity levels below 50% in your home. A dehumidifier can help you maintain this low level all day.
  • Open windows regularly to ventilate your property. This will get rid of any humid air, bring in fresh air, and improve air circulation.
  • Ventilate the bathroom and kitchen while washing and cooking. You should also have extractor fans installed in these rooms.
  • Check the windows to see if they are letting rain seep into your home. Inspect the sealant for damage, too.
  • Clean up and dry any spillages immediately, particularly puddles of water after bathing.
  • Inspect your property’s exterior regularly for broken guttering and drainpipes. Have any leaks or issues letting water in fixed as soon as possible by professionals.
  • Move furniture away from the walls and keep doors open to allow air to circulate through your home.
  • Use moisture-resistant and mildew-resistant paint, particularly in the bathroom and kitchen.
