Bedrooms usually contain the ideal conditions for mould to grow and thrive. Should you spot any, you must have it professionally removed as soon as possible as mould growing in the bedroom can be particularly harmful for your health.
At ICE Cleaning, we can remove all the mould from your home, including from the air, with our mould remediation services. We are a corporate member of Dewpoint Professional, and our technicians can diagnose what is causing the mould in your home to ensure it does not return.
Keep reading to find out what is causing mould to grow in your bedroom and how to prevent it in the future.
Why is there mould in my bedroom?
Mould is a type of fungus that spreads by releasing spores into the air which begin to grow when they settle on a surface that contains moisture.
It is usually caused by condensation which makes surfaces damp, penetrating and rising damp, high humidity, and poor ventilation. Bedrooms in particular tend to provide mould with its ideal conditions:
- Condensation often forms on windows as we exhale so much water vapour as we sleep
- Air flow can be poor behind pieces of furniture or inside closets and wardrobes
- Bedrooms contain plenty of porous surfaces for mould to feed off of, like upholstery, clothes, and carpets
You should regularly be checking for the signs of mould including a humid closet or wardrobe, condensation on your windows, and a musty, stale odour.
The effects of mould on your health
Breathing in or ingesting mould spores usually causes an allergic reaction and you may suffer from sneezing, coughing, irritated eyes and skin, or a stuffy nose. If you have asthma, it can also trigger an asthma attack.
Young children, elderly people, and people with pre-existing skin and respiratory problems or a weakened immune system are more sensitive to mould exposure.
When you sleep in a room that contains mould, however, it can have much more serious effects as you will be exposed to it for a very long time. According to one study, mould is correlated with insomnia, snoring, and daytime sleepiness.
Aside from putting your health at risk, mould can cause damage to your property and possessions, too. Mould feeds on organic material, like wood, certain fabrics, and some building materials so it can cause them to deteriorate.
If you spot any in your home, whether there is mould on wallpaper in your bedroom or mould in the corner of the bedroom ceiling, have it removed immediately.
How to remove mould
There are lots of mould removers available on the market, but it is recommended you always bring in professional cleaners, like our technicians, to tackle your mould problem.
Firstly, they will have the personal protective equipment (PPE) to safely remove mould. During remediation, you might have to come in close contact with the mould and could be putting your health at risk.
They will also have the training and specialist equipment required to get rid of every trace of the mould on a range of surfaces.
Some DIY mould removal methods can make the situation worse as well. Scrubbing the mould, for example, could aggravate it and encourage it to release spores.
Although you should not clean mould yourself, there are lots of things you can do to prevent it in the future.
How to stop mould in bedrooms
- Keep humidity in the bedroom below 50% - a dehumidifier can help you maintain this low level
- Regularly open windows, especially in the mornings, to ventilate the room and get rid of any moist air
- Make sure there is a gap between furniture to allow air to flow freely behind it
- Have water damage and leaks repaired as soon as possible
- Check your closet or wardrobe for mould regularly – you can find out more about preventing mould in a wardrobe in this blog
