What causes mould to grow on curtains?
Mould is a type of fungus that breaks down dead organic materials. It is caused by excess moisture and thrives in environments with high humidity and poor ventilation.
You can usually find it in warm, damp places in the home, like on the windowsill. This is because during colder months condensation can form on windows and there are lots of crevices for the damp to get trapped in. If the windowsill is wooden, mould will grow quite quickly as it has a food source.
Curtains are very susceptible to mould as they are usually close to or touch windows and windowsills.
Why you must have the mould removed immediately
Mould is dangerous to be exposed to as it can trigger a range of health problems. It produces allergens and irritants which cause allergic reactions should you inhale, touch, or ingest the spores, like skin rashes and a runny nose. Some types can even release toxic substances, on occasion.
Prolonged exposure could cause more serious health issues, including chronic sinusitis and organ damage. You can find out more about how harmful mould is here.
Mouldy curtains, in particular, are a big concern as they are normally in the rooms we spend a lot of time in, like the living room or bedroom. Due to the sheer size of curtains a large amount might grow on them.
How to get rid of mould
You must never attempt mould remediation yourself. When you try and clean it with cleaning products or DIY remedies, you put yourself in much closer contact with the it.
Should you scrub it, you might release spores into the air and could inhale it, too. You may just tackle the surface, visible spores, as well, and leave behind mould that can continue to grow and spread.
Removing mould from curtains is especially difficult. Fabric is porous so it might penetrate deep into the material and evade cleaning products.
Only professionals with specialist products and equipment can remove all the spores and make your property mould-free. They will wear personal protective equipment throughout the mould service to keep themselves safe.
Our technicians will also diagnose the root cause of the mould, such as condensation on windowsills or a leaky roof, and advise on how to stop it coming back.
How to prevent mould growing on curtains
First, you need to make sure there is no mould and damp on your windowsills, or condensation forming on the windows.
- Make sure you open your windows regularly so humidity can’t build up
- Consider investing in double-glazed windows to lower the chances of condensation
- Swap your curtains from organic materials, like linen, for manmade fabric, like polyester
- Clean your windowsills regularly as dust can accumulate and provides organic material for mould to grow on
- Insulate your property better to regulate the temperature and reduce the likelihood of condensation
Keeping the rest of your property mould-free will also lower the chances of it growing on your curtains. There are lots of ways to stop mould coming back including:
- When you use rooms that tend to get steamy or humid, like the bathroom or kitchen, open a window or use an extractor fan
- Keep doors to these rooms shut when having a shower or cooking so the steam does not travel around the property
- Try to keep humidity levels below 50% with a dehumidifier
- Don’t dry clothing indoors as it can lead to damp
- Open windows frequently to ventilate the property
