What causes mould to grow on shower curtains?
Mould is caused by excess moisture, like damp and humidity, and therefore thrives in bathrooms where there is lots of steam, condensation, and poor ventilation. There are lots of reasons why the shower curtain specifically tends to get mouldy:
- It gets wet regularly (i.e., when someone uses the shower)
- Moisture can get trapped between the curtain and the liner
- It can’t properly dry out if it is not spread or stretched out after a shower
When mould appears on your shower curtain, it could spread to the rest of your bathroom and lead to a serious mould problem. You can find out more about the causes of mould here.
Why you must have mould removed
Mould is not just an unsightly addition to your home. It can put the residents’ health at risk, particularly if they are young, elderly, have weakened immune systems, or respiratory problems.
The fungus produces allergens, irritants, and occasionally toxic substances. Inhaling, ingesting, and touching mould spores may trigger an allergic reaction like sneezing and a runny nose. Long term exposure can lead to more serious problems, including chronic sinusitis, fatigue, and organ damage.
A mouldy shower curtain is especially dangerous as the sheer size means a lot of mould can grow on it. Given how often the bathroom tends to get used, you will be regularly exposed to it, too.
You are also more likely to come near it than mould on the ceiling, for example, and will probably touch it when you move the shower curtain.
To keep your home safe, bring in professional cleaners to remediate any mould as soon as your spot it.
How to clean mould off a shower curtain
There may be lots of products and DIY remedies that claim to remove mould, but you should always bring in professional cleaners.
When you try and clean mould, you come in much closer contact with it, and are more likely to touch the spores. Should you scrub at it without personal protective equipment, you could release some of the mould spores into the air and inhale them.
You might not clean up all the mould, either, and may leave behind spores which will grow back and spread. Some shower curtains are made of fabric, for instance, so it can sink deep into its pores and is very difficult to kill. You can find out more about removing mould from fabric in this blog.
Professional cleaners from mould removal companies will have the specialist products and equipment – including PPE – to eliminate all the spores safely and thoroughly.
How to prevent mould growing on your shower curtain
There are lots of ways to stop mould growing and spreading in your property. But there are some specific things you need to do to keep your shower curtain mould-free:
- Keep the shower curtain and liner separate so they can dry out fully and no moisture gets trapped between the two
- After a shower, do not leave the curtain scrunched to one side – stretch or spread it out so it can evenly dry
- Regularly clean your shower curtain in the washing machine so dust (which mould can settle on) does not build up
- Make sure your bath mat is able to dry out to remove any excess moisture in the shower area
