In October 2020, the team at ICE Cleaning was approached to provide assistance during the filming of the BBC’s hit new comedy series, ‘The Cleaner’.

Starring actor and comedian Greg Davies as Paul Wickstead, a state-certified cleaning technician, the show plays on the humorous side of crime scene cleaning. The first episode aired on British television on Friday 10th September 2021, with a further five episodes scheduled throughout September and October.

As the series unfolds, Davies’ charmingly acerbic character becomes acquainted with a variety of interesting individuals at the scene of each incident, including Sheila, played by Helena Bonham Carter, and Terence Redford, played by David Mitchell.

ICE Cleaning played a critical role in teaching the production team the processes involved in real-life crime scene cleaning, from how to approach difficult situations to the range of equipment required to complete the actual clean. ICE Cleaning also provided the BBC with the relevant cleaning equipment and machinery to use in the show.

Zac Hemming, Managing Director at ICE Cleaning, commented, “We’re honoured that the BBC chose ICE Cleaning to get involved with the project and were thrilled to provide a full day’s training on crime scene cleaning for the show’s producers.”

“It was a brilliant experience to witness the level of detail that went into the production of the series,” he continued. “Crime scene cleaning is one of the most fascinating services that we offer, but it’s certainly not for everyone. ‘The Cleaner’ does a great job in cultivating a sense of humour around such a morbid subject.”

Described by The Guardian as ‘a dark and curious comedy’, the six-part series is based on the German comedy ‘Der Tatortreiniger’, which aired a total of seven seasons due to its phenomenal success. The cast of the British remake hope to achieve similar success.

Jane Dundas, Location Manager at the BBC, contacted Zac Hemming to provide feedback on ICE Cleaning’s role in the making of the show.

“ICE Cleaning were incredibly helpful and took the time to address all of our queries and provide some in-depth, valuable training,” said Jane. “It was evident that they knew exactly what they were talking about and fully understood the range of hazards and processes involved in trauma and biohazard cleaning, in particular crime scene cleaning.”
