Tips For Keeping Your Home Clean This Winter

We've heard of spring cleans, when we put on our gloves and grab a mop, ready to spruce up the house for the coming in of the warm weather.

However, going into winter is another important time to give your home a deep clean. It is an opportunity to carry out the more time-consuming tasks we often don't have time sure, like clearing out the fridge and revitalising your carpets.

Also be aware that mould growth is a large concern for many households in the UK during this season. To learn more about how to protect your home from this, check out our article on mould prevention.

With that in mind, have a read of our blog for some guidance on how to keep your home clean ahead of the winter.

Deep clean furniture and carpets

The carpet and furniture are popular places for dust to collect, which is why regular vacuuming is vital for keeping your carpets clean.

Use the attachments from your vacuum to clean underneath furniture and between sofa cushions. Crumbs and other substances become embedded into furniture, so take the time to clean everything up,

If there are stains on your carpet, you may opt to steam clean the floor. This will get rid of marks on the surface that have stubbornly remained. This could be beneficial if you are looking to sell your house, where the finer details of your property are crucial.

As well as furniture, take care of upholstery. Curtains tend to collect a lot of dust, so put them through the washing machine if you're able to detach them. However, if this isn't viable, vacuum them instead.

These tasks, while tiresome, can increase your enjoyment of the home in the winter.

Clean out the HVAC system

HVAC system filters are prone to collecting dust when it controls and pushes air around the property. It is recommended that you install a new air filter to the system approximately every three months.

If the filter has become clogged, you may find that you're using more energy to heat your home. Hire in a specialist to help you identify the issue if you suspect it might be something to do with your HVAC system.

A HVAC system in good working order will prevent allergens from spreading in your property, helping protect your health in the cold winter conditions.

Thoroughly clean your kitchen

Conducting a deep clean of your kitchen can seem like a big undertaking, but it is a necessary job. A good place to start is by throwing away any out-of-date food.

It is also the perfect opportunity to tackle the bigger appliances, like the oven or stove. Grease build-up from food can quickly make these implements dirty. Be sure to wear Marigolds when you clean, as it can be a messy job.

Don't forget the hidden spots in your kitchen too! Ensure the backsplash, sink, cabinets and baseboards are all cleaned. When washing cabinets, remove all plates and cutlery from drawers.

Once the job is complete, your kitchen will be a much safer place for preparing food. Additionally, as homes often consist of an open space design, a clean kitchen is a much more inviting feature for visitors.

Clear out the fridge

There is often food in the fridge that has been forgotten about. Take the time to throw away any expired food and unload fresh food into a cooler bag while you clean the inside of the appliance.

If you can detach the shelves from the fridge to clean them, this can make the job easier. Also be sure you clean the shelves on the door of the fridge, as well as the floor.

While you're at it, why not take the time to clear out your pantry? In winter we tend to eat a lot more tinned food, so organise this area so that the food you most need is easy to find.

Have your windows washed

This is a task that should ideally be completed 3-4 times a year, as you would be surprised at how much dirt and grime from the elements can collect on your windows.

A benefit of having your windows washed as you go into the winter season is that you will see daylight for longer. This is advantageous when the days are much shorter.

Don't forget to clean the windows on the inside periodically too, as dust and other substances can become stuck to the surface over time.

At ICE Cleaning, our experts can carry out window cleaning services for you whenever you need it. They will work hard to meet your needs, using their various accreditations, such as IPAF, to complete the work safely.
