What Are The Benefits Of Driving An Electric Vehicle?
The number of electric vehicles purchased in the UK is on the rise.
Since 2014, there has been an increase in the number of electric vehicles purchased in the UK.
In 2021, a total of 260,000 electric vehicles were purchased. However, a large proportion of the nation remain hesitant to make the transition.
Following the recent announcement of the ban of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, we turned to LinkedIn to gather our followers’ thoughts.
We first asked our LinkedIn followers which type of vehicle they drive.
Pie Chart 1: Types of vehicles driven by survey respondents
Non-electric vehicles proved significantly more popular than hybrid and electric vehicles, accounting for 70% of all votes. Just 20% of all participants admitted to owning an electric vehicle, with only 10% owning a hybrid vehicle.
What are the main reasons for not making the switch?
We carried out a second poll on LinkedIn to discover the key motives for staying away from electric vehicles.
We gave our followers four options to choose from:
- I’m happy with my current car
- I’m waiting for more options
- I can’t afford it right now
- I’m anxious about the range
Pie Chart 2: Reasons for not switching to an electric vehicle, provided by survey respondents
The most common reason proved to be anxiety surrounding the range of electric vehicles (50%).
According to New Motion, the average range of a full electric car is around 181 miles. Though, cars like the Tesla Model S 90D are capable of travelling up to 346 miles in a single journey.
Of course, there are a number of factors that can affect driving range, such as:
- Aggressive driving
- Steep hills and mountain climbs
- Non-stop high speeds
- Strong headwinds
- Extra weight – for example, heavy luggage
- Extreme temperatures
Generally, it can be assumed that participants feel anxious over the idea of forgetting to charge their vehicle, rather than the actual range at full charge.
Of the remaining respondents, 38% blamed affordability from making the switch, whilst 12% stated that they’re happy with their current car.
Nimble Fins writes that the average cost to buy an electric car in the UK is around £44,000. Assuming that drivers abide by expert advice to limit car-related expenses to 10-15% of monthly income, this figure is out of reach for most households in the UK.
However, a recent study by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) revealed that electric cars will be cheaper to produce than models with petrol and diesel engines by 2027. The study claims that lower costs will mean more affordable prices too.
What are the benefits of owning an electric vehicle?
The pressure behind making the switch stems from concerns about ecological damage.
According to EDF, Britain’s largest generator of zero carbon electricity, electric cars are better for the environment as they emit fewer greenhouse gases and air pollutants than petrol or diesel cars. Electric vehicles can also help with noise pollution, creating a quieter environment for all.
There are many personal benefits of owning an electric vehicle too. For example, they’re cheaper to run. From tax incentives to enhanced fuel efficiency, it’s likely you’ll experience lower maintenance requirements with an electric vehicle (Go Ultra Low).
To make the most out of your electric vehicle, you should avoid using fast charging methods. Despite being highly effective, fast charging can actually drain your battery faster.
How can British businesses help?
With the support of local businesses, the transition can be smooth and straightforward.
Businesses should invest in pod-point charging stations at retail parks, petrol stations and places of work. This will encourage employees and local residents to make the switch, given the ease of access to charging stations.
Companies should also invest in battery-run vehicles for their operations and offer electric company cars to those who need them. Not only does this make sense economically, as there won’t be fuel expenses or road tax, but it’s good for the environment as well.
As a business, you’ll be able to say that you’re doing your part for the next generation.
We're committed to creating a sustainable future.
Here at ICE Cleaning, we’re dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint and encouraging our workforce to act sustainably. We rely on local suppliers and use eco-friendly solutions wherever possible.
Upon the move to our new office in Cudham, Kent, we will be introducing charging stations in our staff car park to make it easier for those driving electric vehicles.
We’re hopeful that our actions will encourage our workforce to make the switch to an electric vehicle, and even prompt other businesses to follow.
