Keep reading to find out what causes mould to grow on the bedroom ceiling and how to remove it.

What causes mould on ceilings?

Mould grows in environments that contain excess moisture. It is usually caused by high humidity, poor ventilation and air flow, rising and penetrating damp, and condensation.

Mould is normally found in the bathroom and kitchen due to the steamy, humid conditions and wet surfaces.

But another common place it can be found on is cold surfaces like walls and ceilings. This is because when warm, humid air comes in contact with them, it causes condensation to form, making the surface wet. Poor ventilation and minimal air flow increase the chances of condensation as they allow humid air to get trapped inside a space.

Leaks from upstairs rooms and the roof are another common cause of ceiling mould. Even the paint on ceilings can provide sufficient food for mould, too, enabling it to grow and spread quickly.

What causes mould in bedrooms?

Sleeping can inadvertently contribute to mould growth. When we sleep, our bodies generate heat which increases room temperature. Breathing while we sleep also releases moisture into the air.

Ensuite bathrooms are another potential source of bedroom mould infestation. The steam generated from using showers and baths can escape into the bedroom, boosting humidity levels.

Mouldy wardrobes and closets - which is a very common problem - could allow the mould to spread to the rest of the room, too, such as to the walls. You can find out more about what causes mould in the bedroom in this blog

The dangers of mould

Mould in your bedroom is not just an eyesore; it's a health hazard. Breathing in, ingesting, and touching mould spores may lead to respiratory issues, allergic reactions, or even more serious health conditions like sick building syndrome.

Consistent exposure is particularly risky for individuals with pre-existing conditions like asthma or weakened immune systems. If it's growing in your bedroom, you will also be exposed to the mould for an extended period of time.

Beyond physical symptoms, living with mould can disrupt your quality of sleep, too. If you are constantly waking up due to a stuffy nose or difficulty breathing, it's likely that you are not getting enough REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. This is the most restorative phase where deep healing occurs within our bodies.

Studies have proven there is a correlation between mould exposure and snoring, insomnia, and excessive daytime sleepiness, as well.

How to get rid of mould on the ceiling in the bedroom

While it might seem tempting to remove mould yourself using home remedies or off-the-shelf products, this approach is usually not that effective.

Bleach, for example, is a popular solution but it does not penetrate porous surfaces. This means it can leave behind mould roots which will regrow over time. Similarly, natural remedies like vinegar or baking soda are not always strong enough to kill all types of mould spores.

These solutions don't deal with the cause of the mould, too, so even if you did get rid of the mould, it would likely grow back soon after treatment.

Furthermore, improper cleaning methods, like scrubbing at the mould, can cause it to release spores which can travel to other parts of your home and cause mould growth elsewhere.

That is why bringing in professionals is essential when tackling ceiling mould. They use specialised equipment and products that are designed to eradicate all traces of mould without damaging your property. They will also be able to advise on how to prevent future occurrences.

How to prevent mould on the ceiling in the bedroom

Firstly, keep your bedroom well-ventilated to get rid of any humid air. Regularly open windows - particularly in the morning - to get rid of the humidity produced overnight. Don't forget to position your furniture in a way that allows air to circulate freely around the room (i.e. keep a gap between furniture and the wall).

Make sure you use an extractor fan during and after washing if you have an ensuite bathroom to stop moisture drifting into your bedroom, as well.

You should also consider investing in a dehumidifier. They absorb excess moisture from the air, reducing the humidity level.

Make sure you keep the room well-heated so none of the surfaces get too cold, and ensure the ceiling is well-insulated. This will greatly lower the chances of condensation forming on the ceiling. Be wary of leaks and damp on the ceiling, too. You can learn more about how to prevent mould in a bedroom here
