What are the dangers of living with mould?

Mould can be an unsightly feature in the home that causes black, smudgy, and slimy marks on walls, ceilings, furniture, and your possessions. It could even damage the integrity of some materials, like wooden or metal furniture, and cost you when it comes to replacements.

More importantly, it puts people living in the property at risk of health problems. Especially those that are young, elderly, have lung conditions, or have weak immune systems.

Mould produces allergens which trigger allergic reactions should you inhale or tough the spores, and may cause a runny nose, mild fever, and sneezing. It can also trigger asthma attacks. Prolonged exposure might result in more serious respiratory conditions.

What kills mould naturally?

There are lots of chemicals and cleaning products that can kill mould, such as:

  • Bleach
  • Borax
  • White vinegar
  • Hydrogen peroxide

However, without specialist equipment and training in how best to remove it, they are normally ineffective at killing all of it and the spores quickly return.

This is because home remedies that advise on using them only clean the visible spores on the surface, and it is very difficult to tackle the spores deep in the materials they are growing on.

You need to make sure all the spores have been removed from the surface and the air, and then repair the problem that is causing it to eradicate mould permanently.

Don’t try mould removal yourself

Should you scrub the affected area, you will release the spores up into the air so they can spread around your property and cause it to breakout elsewhere. It also puts you at risk of inhaling the spores if you are not wearing protective equipment, like a face mask.

It’s likely you will not tackle all the mould, as well. Spores are often concealed in air vents, or other hidden and difficult to reach spots. Fail to remove them, and they might keep spreading around the home.

Hire professional cleaners

Only professionals should attempt mould remediation. They have the experience to find all the areas that need to be treated, and will have the products and equipment to remove it thoroughly from the surfaces and the air. They should also have the gear to keep themselves safe.

How to stop mould coming back

Even if you remove mould from your home, it can come back if the conditions are right. It is caused by excess moisture or humidity and thrives in properties with poor ventilation.

To get rid of it permanently, you must identify what is causing it. This should be as simple as looking for damp or humid areas in your home, or seeing where the mould growth is most prevalent. You can learn more about how to stop it returning in this blog.

Then, fix the problem, whether that is condensation on a windowsill, a leaky pipe in the basement, or a roof that is letting in rain. Once you have eliminated the mould and fixed the problem, you must also put in place preventative measures to reduce humidity and damp in your home.

How to prevent mould

Firstly, make sure humidity levels in your home are always below 50% by keeping the property well ventilated, or consider using a dehumidifier.

When using particularly humid rooms – like the bathroom or kitchen – keep doors shut so the moist air can’t travel around the home. Try and use fans or open windows, too, so it does not get trapped.

If possible, don’t dry clothes inside your home as the moisture can spread and settle throughout the property.

Lastly, should your home get flooded, a leak lets in water, or there is water damage, bring in professional cleaners as soon as possible to dry and deep-clean your home.

Our technicians are Dewpoint accredited mould removal experts that can also diagnose the cause of your mould problem, and advise you on how to prevent it in the future.
