What causes mould around windows?

Mould is a type of fungus that thrives in environments that contain excessive moisture. It is caused by high humidity, penetrating damp, rising damp, condensation, and poor ventilation. It often appears in bathrooms and kitchens because of the moist, warm air. But one of the other most common places to find it is on your windows.

This is because when condensation forms on windows, it makes the windowsill, window frame, and surrounding area damp. Curtains and blinds can also trap in air, leading to poor air flow and allowing moist air to build up. Another major cause of mould on windows is leaks making the area wet.

Mould can start growing in the silicone sealant of your windows, too. Although the silicone is waterproof, if there is a gap behind the sealant, water can get behind it and mould can form there. Over time, the mould then spreads to the front of the sealant. You can find out more about what causes black mould around windows in this blog

The effects of mould growth on windows

Mould is not just unsightly; it poses a risk to your health and property. Mould releases allergens, irritants, and some kinds even produce toxic chemicals.

Ingesting, inhaling, and touching mould can trigger allergic responses, respiratory issues, and even more severe health problems, like sick building syndrome. Some people are particularly vulnerable to mould growth including asthmatics, people with other underlying respiratory conditions, elderly people, and very young children.

It can also damage your property. Mould feeds off of organic matter, like wood. If you have wooden window frames, they will deteriorate over time. Mould spores can spread from your window onto nearby walls or curtains, putting them at risk of being degraded, too.

What to do if you spot mould in your home

Mould can be a serious issue that needs immediate attention. But you should not try to tackle it yourself as improper handling may lead to more harm than good. Lots of DIY mould removers, like bleach and vinegar, for example, are not that effective at killing mould. Any left behind will simply grow back.

Some cleaning products are dangerous to use, as well, like bleach, which is corrosive and produces harmful fumes. Treating the mould will also bring you in close contact with it so you will be more likely to inhale, ingest, or touch it. Even the wrong method can encourage the mould to spread.

Scrubbing the mould can aggravate it causing it to release spores, too. These spores can spread and cause mould growth elsewhere.

Hiring specialists ensures thorough mould cleaning without causing further damage or worsening the situation. They have the training and specialised equipment to effectively deal with mould problem, including removing black mould.

Besides getting rid of the mould, they will identify what's causing the mould and advise on how to prevent future infestations.

How to stop mould growing on your windows

Mould loves damp, warm environments. So, preventing these conditions from forming is key to keeping mould at bay.

Ventilation is one of the best ways to reduce humidity. Make sure you open your windows regularly or use trickle vents during the colder seasons. Use extractor fans in rooms that get very steamy and humid, like kitchens and bathrooms.

Regular cleaning can also prevent mould growth on windows as it can feed off of dust, dirt, and dead bugs. Wipe down any condensation on your windows frequently, too, as this is the main cause of mould on windows.

Avoid drying clothes indoors as this can release moist air into the property. Instead, hang them up outside or use a tumble dryer.

You should encourage airflow in your property, as well. This will replace stagnant pockets of humid air with fresh air.

Don't forget to keep your home heated. If it gets too cold, condensation will be much more likely to form. You can find out more about how to prevent mould forming on your windows in this blog
