Not only can algae be harmful to human health, but can also pose a range of serious health threats to pets and local wildlife.

Whilst most kinds of algae are harmless, there are a number of algae forms which produce dangerous toxins. These variants are often found near lakes, rivers and oceans, and tend to accrue rapidly. If you spot algae or moss forming on your site, you should avoid contact with the substance.

Ultimately, the degree of risk is determined by the type of algae present and the level of exposure. According to Better Health, direct skin contact may cause skin and eye irritation, whilst inhalation will cause a lesser effect on the body. The symptoms caused by inhaling the substance can be likened to those of hay fever or other mild respiratory issues. Drinking algae-contaminated water may cause more serious health consequences, such as gastroenteritis, diarrhoea, fevers, headaches, liver problems or nervous system failure.

Likewise, animals can be poisoned via contact or ingestion of harmful algae. According to Blue Cross, exposure to toxic blue-green algae can be fatal or cause long-term health problems for dogs. If your pet eats or inhales large quantities of toxic algae, they may be subject to diarrhoea, drooling, vomiting, seizures, disorientation, breathing difficulties or general muscle weakness. Local wildlife, such as foxes, fish and birds, may also experience these symptoms. To protect your pet from falling ill, do not let your them consume the substance.

The best way to prevent humans and animals from suffering from algae-related issues is to call for the assistance of a professional cleaning company as soon as you first spot it.
