How does fire damage impact a building?
When a fire occurs, it causes damage not only to the overall structure but also to the entire property. These damages can linger for months or even years if not professionally addressed, making the property unsafe and uninhabitable. There are four types of fire damage that you should be aware of:
Ash damage
This type of damage leaves behind dense particles that cover the entire structure and furniture.
Soot damage
This type of damage involves smoke and soot particles that linger in the air, polluting it and causing potential threats to your health. It can also damage electrical outlets.
Smoke damage
This damage leaves pungent odours that are hard to remove with regular cleaning. Professional intervention is required to address this issue.
Water damage
This damage is caused by the extinguishing methods used to put out the fire. It can lead to dampness, rot, and mould growth, and must be dried quickly to prevent further damage.
How often should a fire risk assessment be conducted?
As an employer or workplace manager, it is your responsibility to ensure the safety of all employees working on-site.
Although there is no legal requirement for how often you should conduct fire risk assessments, we recommend that you do them at least once a year. If you employ five or more people, it is a legal obligation to keep a written record of your fire risk assessments.
There are five key steps to follow when conducting a fire risk assessment; inspecting the premises, identifying potential fire hazards, assessing who is at risk, evaluating and reducing risks, and recording and planning.
Step 1: Identify fire hazards
Inspect the building for any potential fire hazards that could be present. You should consider the state of electrical equipment, cooking appliances, no-smoking rules, the quality of heating equipment, and measures against arson.
Step 2: Assess who is at risk
Identify all the people on the premises and make note of anyone who may be young, disabled, or a lone worker.
Step 3: Evaluate and reduce risks
Make note of the number of floors, staircases, location, and number of fire exits. Identify fire alarms, exit signs, emergency lighters, and fire extinguishers.
Step 4: Record and plan
Create a plan detailing the changes that need to be made and how you will help your staff understand these new changes.
Step 5: Review
Review the new plan and proposed changes with your staff before implementing them.
