What types of fire extinguishers are there?
Fire extinguishers are identified by the colour coding provided by British Standards. The new standard for manufacturing fire extinguishers follows the BS EN 3 Colour Code. This means all fire extinguishers must be red with a specific colour on the label specifying the extinguishing method inside.
Each class of fire will require a specific extinguishing method, as using the wrong one could exacerbate the fire or injure the user holding it. The following types of fire extinguishers can be used with these fire classes:
Water (Simple red design)
Suitable for Class A fires, which are caused by burning organics such as wood and paper.
Water Mist (White and red design)
Most suited to Class A, but can be used for B in flammable liquids, and C for flammable gasses. Can also be used on small F fires for fats or kitchen oils.
Foam (Red with a cream label)
Best for Class A and B fires, but can be used for electrical fires if it has been dielectrically tested.
Dry Power (Red with a blue label)
Suitable in Class A, B, C, and electrical fires.
Carbon Dioxide (Red with a black label)
Only to be used on Class B and electrical fires.
Wet Chemical (Red with a yellow label)
Most suited to Class A and F fires, but safe to use for some Class B fires.
Specialist Powder (Red with blue panel)
Only suited to Class D fires, involving metallic elements like aluminium swarf.
Fire safety for homeowners to be aware of
As a homeowner, it is your responsibility to take steps to prevent a fire from starting. Did you know that if you do not have a functioning smoke alarm, you are eight times more likely to die in a fire?
You must install fire safety tools that can alert you when smoke is detected to ensure your safety. Remember to install a smoke alarm on every level of your home and test it monthly. If you have solid fuel-burning appliances, you should install a carbon monoxide detector to detect any possible leaks.
To keep your home safe, use common sense and take safety measures. Here are some tips to prevent common dwelling fires:
- Use cooking appliances safely and properly
- Replace old fuses with new, correctly labelled ones
- Avoid overcrowding extension cords
- Ensure that your furniture has fire-resistant labelling
- Use portable heaters and electric blankets responsibly
- Always smoke outdoors and put out cigars and cigarettes properly
- Blow out candles when they are unattended
- Keep lighters and matchboxes out of children's reach
- Have a safe escape plan in case of a fire
