What is soot?
When you recognise the smell of smoke on your property, sometimes you cannot see the evidence of it. These are called soot particles, and they linger after a fire, produced by the incomplete combustion of wood, coal, or other fuel types.
When a fire burns, you may notice black plumes of smoke coming off a yellow flame — which is carbon. These particles are released into the air and will settle on surfaces to create a black residue called soot.
The particles are minuscule and invisible to the naked eye, and much smaller than sand or hair molecules. Because of their microscopic size, they line the inside of your lungs and cause respiratory irritation. They also trigger skin conditions or asthma conditions.
Types of soot
Dry Soot
After a high-temperature fire, dry soot is produced with large amounts of oxygen and is composed of natural materials. Due to this, it can cause more damage to the surface and is incredibly hard to clean due to its size. It is not a very powerful smell, but still dangerous to inhale.
Oily Soot
In an enclosed space like a furnace or wood burner, there is a chance that you hear a loud puff or a bang due to unburnt materials suddenly igniting. Oily soot collects when this happens, which easily contaminates your home, coating surfaces in a slick, black residue that smells of burning oil.
Protein Soot
If you cook with oil in a well-lit area, you may notice a nearly invisible mist coming off your pan. This smoke and soot occur if the heat is too high, or a small fire happened in your kitchen. The soot smells very pungent and can discolour the paint in your home.
Wet Soot
When low-temperature fires occur with a lack of oxygen, wet soot covers a surface and smears when wiped. The smell is strong and dangerous to inhale due to the toxins present in the soot.

How to reduce the smell of smoke
Do not attempt to clean or deal with fire damage and odour. DIY remedies may aggravate the soot or cause more structural harm to your house. A professional cleaning company will handle these issues for you, but there are a few things you can do before professionals come to ease the odour in your home:
Keep yourself safe
Wear protective clothing such as gloves, a mask, and a hard hat before re-entering the affected property.
Ventilate the property
Open the doors and windows, allowing the odour to leave and allow fresh air to enter. If it is too cold, open windows at regular intervals and invest in a fan or air purifier. Although these do not eliminate the odour, they will reduce its intensity.
Get rid of any contaminated objects
Because of their permeable nature, fabrics and upholstery are likely to be a source of the odour. You may help eliminate large amounts of soot particles by having them professionally cleaned or disposed of.
