What areas in the UK are high risk?

The Environment Agency in the UK has reported that around 1 in 6 homes are at risk of flooding across England. You can discover if your home is a high risk by checking the GOV.UK website and type in your postcode.

If your home falls under the category of high risk, your insurance provider may charge you more for coverage or have certain terms in place for you.

There are three types of high-risk areas: coastal flooding, river flooding, and surface water flooding. In these areas, some counties more vulnerable to high levels of flooding.

Coastal flooding

  • Cornwall
  • Kent and Sussex coastal areas
  • East Coast areas

River flooding

  • Yorkshire
  • Essex
  • Somerset
  • Kent
  • Cambridgeshire
  • Sussex
  • Lincolnshire
  • Norfolk

Surface water flooding

  • Cumbria
  • Merseyside
  • Yorkshire
  • Lincolnshire
  • Wiltshire
  • Buckinghamshire

What types of floods are there?

The UK experiences six types of flooding, and knowing the types of floods that could affect your home will better prepare you if you receive a warning from local authorities.

Coastal flooding

This type of flood occurs in areas close to the sea, which makes them at high risk of coastal flooding. Contributing factors can trigger floods, like stormy weather and high tides. Seawater naturally erodes the land but is accelerating due to climate change. This causes further damage to homes and businesses and can disrupt communities for a long time.

River flooding

This is the most common type of flooding in the UK, and communities near rivers are at high risk for river flooding. The river flow grows stronger and rise due to obstructions or severe rainfall, causing a flood. River flooding can bring strong currents, which threaten your safety.

Surface water flooding

Low or medium-risk areas could still experience surface water flooding during excessive rainfall or when storm drains become blocked. There is no way to predict these floods as they can happen anywhere, so you must always be vigilant during storms or consistent rainfall.

Reservoir flooding

Although extremely rare, there is always a possibility of a reservoir flooding if there is an error or damage. This type of flooding is extremely dangerous due to the fast-flowing water and is difficult to stop.

Groundwater flooding

Living in an area with steep slopes and high hills can increase your risk of flooding. When a community is built at the bottom or in the dip of a hill, it can be at risk of groundwater flooding. This flooding is caused by heavy rain and saturated soil being unable to absorb excess water.

Sewer floods

This is another rare instance of flooding that can occur if flood prevention systems fail or there is a burst pipe underground. Sewage flooding is dangerous, spreading pathogens and bacteria quickly which cause severe illness.

We cover all areas in the Thanet District of Kent, including:

  • Birchington-on-Sea
  • Cliffsend
  • Manston
  • Margate
  • Minster-in-Thanet
  • Monkton
  • Ramsgate
  • Sarre
  • Westgate-on-Sea

What issues can follow when water floods your home?

If your home is flooded, one of the first things you will notice is the humidity and dampness in the air. This is common following a flood and can lead to some long-term consequences.

If your home remains damp and humid following a flood, you will spot the signs of mould beginning to grow indoors. Mould can grow on your furniture, walls, curtains, ceilings, and windows. Dehumidifiers and air purifiers can help prevent the spread, but you will require mould remediation services to eradicate it.

There is also a possibility that flood water could have brought in contaminants from sewer or waste pipelines. This will expose your home to a series of pathogens and contaminants that will make your home unliveable and dangerous. You must have your home tested for infectious bacteria before you re-enter.
