What variations of floods are there?

There are six types of flooding that can occur, and they all have the potential to damage your house and affect your health. When the Met Office issues a warning, it will inform you of the type of flood.

Coastal flooding

Flooding may happen when low, dry land on the coast is overrun by strong tides and excessive seawater. Storms and tidal conditions potentially accelerate flooding. Seawater naturally erodes impermeable surfaces, which can lead to structural deterioration and severe coastal flooding.

River flooding

When a flood-prone location receives a lot of rain, a nearby river could rise and cause the soil to become saturated. This might happen further down the channel or at the river's source. In the UK, this kind of flooding occurs most frequently.

Surface water flooding

This form of flooding could happen anywhere in the UK, even in low or medium-risk locations. Soil saturation or clogged drainage systems during severe weather exacerbate surface water flooding. Urban areas with impermeable surfaces are more prone to experience surface water floods.

Reservoir flooding

Due to the artificial nature of the water body, these floods can be rare, but if a structural flaw develops, water may leak out of the reservoir and create floods. They are risky to encounter since the currents in the water might be rather powerful.

Groundwater flooding

Underground water might gradually come to the surface when it rains. Communities with steep slopes or high hills are more susceptible to groundwater flooding because heavy rain or severe storms can raise this over typical levels.

Sewer floods

This flood happens when sewage drains fill up or get clogged due to excessive rainfall, which can contaminate the neighbourhood. Drinking water could get tainted with sewage water and cause severe sickness if consumed.

What types of water quality are there?

The type of water contained in a flood might vary based on the source and how it happened. Blackwater is present in floods brought on by clogged drains and sewage, whereas greywater may be present in floods brought on by natural features like rivers or reservoirs. Knowing the sort of flood will help you identify the water and determine how much cleaning is needed.

Clearwater

Although this water is usually free of pollutants and waste, it can cause property damage through general leaks or appliance breakdown. While there are no contaminants present, clear water can promote mould growth.

Grey Water

This water consists of household wastewater from sinks, washing machines, bathtubs, and showers. Typically, this won't include toilet water, although this depends on the area. Water butts are also used to collect grey water for greenhouses and allotments.

Blackwater

This wastewater from bathrooms and toilets contains human waste. Due to the pollutants and grease present, water from kitchen sinks and dishwashers are sometimes called "blackwater." The presence of this sort of water raises the possibility of serious sickness or disease.
