What objects contain mercury?

Although there are strict regulations on the presence of mercury in everyday objects and how they are transported, many still contain mercury. When disposing of objects with traces of mercury, you must do so per the hazardous waste guidelines to minimise the risk of a spill.

The following are the most common items that may contain traces of mercury:

  • Glass thermometers
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
  • Mercury batteries
  • Circuit boards
  • Backlights
  • UV curing lamps
  • Tilt switches

What types of mercury are there?

Mercury can occur in three forms, each from a different source and presenting varying levels of danger.

Organic Mercury (Methylmercury)

Most often found in poultry, fish, and pesticides. It is the most toxic and encountered form of mercury. We all have this element present in our bodies caused by naturally occurring organic mercury, but it poses little to no risk. However, too much consumption of methylmercury can prove fatal.

Elemental Mercury

This form of mercury is perhaps the most well-known of the three, known for its strange, fluid, and metallic appearance. It will evaporate at room temperature and become a dangerous, odourless vapour that poses an inhalation risk. It was most notably used in glass thermometers back before these were banned.

Inorganic Mercury

This type of mercury is usually white or red and is found in products such as fungicides and disinfectants. It is the least toxic of the forms of mercury, but high exposure could cause skin irritation and rashes and weaken the muscles.

What should you do when you spill mercury?

When mercury spills, you will only have a limited time to evacuate the area. If you work or teach in a building where mercury is at risk of being spilt, you must have an emergency plan for everyone's safety.

Raise the alarm

The first thing you should do is alert everyone nearby that mercury has spilt and evacuate the area. You must block the affected space with barricades or display warning signs to keep people safe.

Ventilate the area

Open doors and windows leading to the outside, and close any that may lead to other areas of the building to contain the spread.

Protect yourself

If you are qualified to help contain a spill with a mercury spill kit, you must wear PPE and gloves to keep yourself safe. Do not try to clean the mercury yourself, and keep contact to a minimum.

Contact the professionals

Once you and everyone in the area are safe, you must contact mercury clean-up specialists who can be on-site quickly to take it from there.
