Emergency Mercury Spillage Cleaning

With years of professional experience and access to specialist cleaning techniques, we are well-equipped to handle any situation that arises in Canterbury.

We are ready to tackle a mercury spill regardless of the size in Canterbury.

Mercury, sometimes called quicksilver, is a metal found naturally across the planet in rocks, soils, and the ocean. Mercury comes in three forms, with the most well-known being elemental mercury. At room temperature, it becomes a liquid and could evaporate into a poisonous vapour if spilt.

When mercury spills, whether it be at home or in the classroom, you must act quickly and prioritise the safety of everyone in the area. Once mercury evaporates, you cannot see or smell it, but it is incredibly toxic when inhaled. Here at ICE Cleaning, we are qualified to clean mercury and can be on-site within a matter of hours in an emergency.

Get in touch today on either 0208 066 0360 or enquiries@icecleaning.co.uk to discover the full range of cleaning services available for customers in Canterbury.

Is mercury still used today?

Over the last twenty years, mercury's previous uses in domestic and industrial settings have drastically declined due to the risks it poses to the public. Advanced alternatives currently dominate the market and replace mercury products. The most prevalent use of mercury is currently in dental fillings, but this is also on the decline.

Mercury in electrical and measuring devices is mostly prohibited but with some exemptions. For the most part, you will not have to worry about a mercury spillage unless you work with it or own some old items in your home that contain it.

What are the risks of mercury exposure?

When mercury spills and becomes an odourless vapour, this is when it poses the most amount of danger to an individual. When inhaled, it can cause some long-term severe health effects like:

  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nervous system damage
  • Organ damage

Who is most at risk for mercury exposure?

Some may be more at risk of mercury exposure than an individual living at home or working in an office. Working individuals who might be most vulnerable can include:

Factory workers

Individuals that work in areas where electrical equipment or automotive parts are composed and put together could experience mercury exposure. This is due to the presence of mercury in some electrical components.

Recycling facility workers

Facility employees may come across some mercury objects in regular recycling bins. This exposes the workers to preventable hazards and is easily avoided by following local council waste disposal procedures.

Chemical plant workers

Some chemical plants might store, move, or use mercury daily. Without proper chemical spill risk assessments, workers may be at risk of inhaling or touching pure mercury.

Health service workers

Dentists, nurses, doctors, and assistants might work with outdated equipment that contains mercury. Dentists and their assistants will also be exposed to small amounts of mercury if their dental amalgams release vapours.

We cover all areas in the Canterbury District of Kent, including:

  • Bekesbourne
  • Broomfield
  • Chestfield
  • Harbledown
  • Herne Bay
  • Hersden
  • Stodmarsh
  • Whistable

Keep your work environment safe

If you work with or use mercury throughout the day in various ways, there are different levels of risk regarding mercury exposure. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has a guidance sheet on how you should approach good practice where mercury is in the workplace:

Identify hazards

You should educate yourself as much as you can on the three forms of mercury, where they might reside, and what harm they could cause to the human body. We recommend that you understand the laws concerning mercury usage and what may be prohibited.

Know your equipment and procedures

Record where mercury exposure is most likely, and warn all workers accordingly. Ensure you have the correct equipment to provide fresh air and contain a mercury spill before cleaners arrive. Check the control procedures in case of a spill, and ensure PPE is available to all workers.

Maintain and clean

You should be carrying out a risk assessment at least once a year, and look to HSE if you are looking for risk assessment templates. Your workers should have access to proper chemical waste disposal equipment and maintain a clean environment to minimise danger.
