What types of mercury are there?

Mercury plays a vital role in our lives through technology and natural occurrence like food consumption. There are three different forms that mercury can come in, and we encounter mercury throughout our lifetimes at low levels of exposure.

Organic mercury (Methylmercury)

Methylmercury is one of the most dangerous forms of mercury, and it exists naturally on the food chain at low levels through fish and poultry. It was also an active ingredient in pesticides before its usage decreased significantly.

Elemental mercury

This is the most well-known form of mercury, recognised for its silver and liquid appearance. It is another dangerous form that evaporates when spilt at room temperature, becoming a toxic, odourless vapour. It was used commonly in pressure and temperature-based devices like thermometers and dental fillings before the use of mercury was limited.

Inorganic mercury

Although this form is the least lethal mercury, it can still cause damage when ingested. Inorganic mercury is formed naturally in the environment and used in industrial processes, making other chemicals. Recently, inorganic mercury traces were found in some cosmetic skin creams, causing mercury restrictions to tighten.

Health risks associated with mercury

Each form of mercury can inflict similar and different effects, depending on the levels of exposure on an individual. Pregnant women, infants, young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are most at risk if there is a mercury spill.

Organic mercury (Methylmercury)

  • Could cause damage to the nervous system when ingested in large amounts
  • Mercury poisoning in pregnant women causes developmental abnormalities and cerebral palsy in babies
  • Fatal toxicity to the neurological development of children

Elemental mercury

  • Inhaling the toxic vapours can lead to severe lung damage
  • Causes neurological disturbances such as memory loss
  • Skin rashes
  • Kidney damage

Inorganic Mercury

  • Irritation and corrosion inflicted on the digestive system when ingested
  • Causes skin irritation and rashes
  • Memory loss
  • Kidney abnormalities

How are people exposed to mercury?

Although mercury is a naturally occurring element, we only encounter low levels. Some individuals may be more at risk of mercury poisoning than others.

Organic mercury (Methylmercury)

The most likely level of exposure you will come across in methylmercury is through the consumption of fish or shellfish. Pregnant women should avoid consuming barramundi, gemfish, orange roughy, shark, ray, swordfish, ling, and southern bluefin tuna.

Elemental mercury

Inhalation of mercury vapour is most likely to happen in the workplace, like dental offices, recycling facilities, smelting factories, or machine development facilities. This usually happens if a spill occurs or if mercury is improperly stored.

Inorganic mercury

Individuals that work in industrial or chemical factory settings may encounter this form of mercury. Inorganic mercury compounds are often used in these facilities to create chemicals.
