Rapid Response Mercury Spillage Cleaning

With years of experience in the chemical spill cleaning sector, we are on hand to deal with all your cleaning needs in Edenbridge.

We guarantee an excellent level of service and outstanding results every time

Mercury is a naturally occurring element in the Earth's crust, often found in cinnabar ores. However, it is present in other forms in our environment. Humans often interact with low levels of mercury, which makes high-level exposures rare, but they could still happen.

Most exposures are through consuming fish and poultry that contain organic mercury. Elemental mercury that spills and evaporates into a toxic vapour can cause the most harm to humans.

If mercury spills in the workplace, school, or at home, you must act quickly. Prioritise your safety and any vulnerable people like young children or the elderly to minimise the risk of mercury poisoning. Here at ICE Cleaning, we have a range of experts that can be on-site in a matter of hours to tend to a spill. They can contain, clean, and decontaminate an area exposed to mercury.

Call us today at 0208 066 0360 to learn more about our full range of chemical spill cleaning services for customers in the Sevenoaks District.

Our experts have years of experience in the chemical spillage cleaning field

The safety and needs of our customers are what matters most to us. When our technicians arrive on-site, they will be equipped with PPE, modern tools, and industry-grade chemicals to carry out the job. The size of the spill and the mercury in the air will help determine the next steps.

This helps our cleaners decide what is required to complete the cleaning process. Feel free to ask our technicians any questions if you have concerns or wish to know more about the process that will take place.

The chemicals we use depend on the size and severity of the spill, and our state-of-the-art equipment ensures that all dangers are gone when we leave the site. An air purity test must be conducted once the cleaning has concluded to ensure that you can occupy the space safely.

How does mercury occur in the environment?

There are a few sources where the mercury will emerge, and although the exposure levels are usually low, you should remain cautious if you are aware of the presence of mercury.

Consumption of fish

Traces of methylmercury are found in predatory or large fish species — when consumed in large quantities the risk of high-level exposure increases.

Dental fillings

The levels of mercury present in dental fillings are low and not considered dangerous to dentists or patients. Recent dental fillings will either contain very little or no mercury at all.

Glass thermometers

Even though these thermometers have been phased out over the past few decades, they may still be sold in charity shops, vintage emporiums, or boot fairs. These contain elemental mercury that turns into vapour upon breakage and spillage.

Broken fluorescent and energy-saving bulbs

These bulbs are made of glass, ceramic, and metals. Inside the bulb is a powder called phosphor and traces of mercury — it is an invisible vapour that works with the phosphor to coat the inside of the glass. If these bulbs break, mercury vapour will release into the air. Although it is a small amount, you should ventilate the room and leave quickly.

Batteries

Battery recycling is an important process everyone should take part in. Proper recycling procedures ensure that batteries are disposed of, preventing mercury exposure. When batteries end up in landfill, traces of mercury will enter the environment and expose workers to high levels of mercury.

What to do when mercury spills

When mercury spills, you must act quickly and prioritise your safety first. Do not try to clean up a spill by yourself, but you can take steps to help contain it safely.

Raise the alarm

Let everyone in the area know of the spill and evacuate. Put up signs to alert anyone unaware.

Ventilate

Open any doors or windows that access the outside to air out the room. Close any doors that may lead to any areas inside the building.

Wear PPE

If you are qualified to contain the spill with a mercury spill kit, you must wear proper PPE. This includes wearing a mask, gloves, and any protective clothing. Do not try to clean the spill yourself.

Evacuate

Leave the area immediately to minimise your levels of mercury exposure. Once you have done this, you must call a professional cleaning company to come and properly decontaminate the area.
