High-Quality Mercury Spillage Cleaning
If you require a reliable cleaning company in Gillingham, give us a call today.
We are Gillingham’s leading experts for chemical spill cleaning solutions.
Mercury occurs naturally throughout the Earth in three forms: elemental, organic, and inorganic. The most common encounter of mercury exposure is the inhalation of the vapours produced by evaporated elemental mercury.
Another regular route of exposure is ingesting organic mercury through the consumption of fish and shellfish. Elemental poses a high risk when inhaled as it can be absorbed quickly into your bloodstream and cause long-term damage.
If you encounter a mercury spill or vapour exposure, it is imperative that you evacuate the area and contact cleaning services. At ICE Cleaning, our technicians can arrive on-site within a few hours to quickly contain the danger and make the environment safe to occupy again.

How does mercury impact the human body?
Through either ingestion or inhalation, mercury is absorbed into the bloodstream and can cross the blood-brain barrier easily. However, mercury mainly grows and attacks the kidneys. It could damage major organs the longer it festers, which may lead to long-term illnesses or death.
Elemental mercury effects
- Respiratory pain and dysfunction
- Tremors
- Sore gums
- Hallucinations
- Skin rashes and peeling
Organic mercury effects (Methylmercury)
- Abdominal pain
- Muscle twitching
- Vomiting
- Necrosis
- Circulatory collapse
Inorganic mercury effects
- Headaches
- Blindness
- Deafness
- Numbness
- Nervous system damage
What to do if you have touched elemental mercury
The UK Government website suggests that if you have touched mercury through your skin or clothes, you must remove the clothing. Wash the affected skin with lukewarm water and soap for 10 to 15 minutes, and call 111 for medical advice. If symptoms of mercury poisoning begin to show, then you must call 999.
To minimise the possibility of contact during a spill, you must evacuate the area right away and call cleaning services to come and contain the spill. Do not try to clean it up yourself as you may be at risk of inhalation or touching it.
If you believe you may have ingested or inhaled toxic vapours, you must seek medical attention immediately due to the severity of mercury in your bloodstream.

Maintaining safety at work
If you are an employer, you are legally obligated to carry out a risk assessment at least once a year. When storing or using mercury, you must have proper procedures in place to help avoid any high-level exposures. There are some work practices you can follow in the meantime to maintain a safe environment where mercury is at risk of spilling:
- Wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking, or touching your face
- Wash at the end of a workday
- Ensure there is access to wash fountains or emergency showers
- Ensure work clothes are disposed of if contaminated
- Monitor the air purity regularly
- Label storage containers properly
- Enforce training, hazard information, and emergency response procedures
- Provide access to spill kits and PPE
Chemical spill risk assessments are just as important as general workplace safety, and your priority should be the lives of your workers. If you are unsure how to perform a chemical spill risk assessment, the Health and Safety Authority provides a handy guide for all employers.
