We can be on-site in a matter of hours to provide a fast, reliable cleaning service.
We provide a cleaning solution like no other for clients in Gravesend.
Mercury is an element that can exist in various forms, but the most well-known form is elemental mercury. This is the liquid form that we are most familiar with — having the appearance of a silvery liquid that breaks into droplets. However, when elemental mercury spills at room temperature, it evaporates into an invisible, odourless vapour which is incredibly toxic to the human body.
If you witness a mercury spill at home, at school, or in the workplace, it is imperative that you put your health and safety first and evacuate the area. You should contact specialist cleaning services immediately to clean the spill, as it is dangerous to do alone without the proper equipment.

How does mercury affect surfaces?
Mercury is a heavy, toxic pollutant and will react depending on the surface it touches. Elemental mercury breaks apart as it moves, forming bead-like shapes. However, on certain floors at lower temperatures, it may remain a liquid instead of evaporating immediately. This allows it to spread and eventually soak or slip into porous surfaces.
Non-porous surfaces
Surfaces like finished wood, concrete, or plastic will not absorb mercury. At a lower temperature, a spill causes the mercury to split into smaller bead-like shapes that can scatter for long distances. If there are no holes or crevices on these surfaces, the beads will remain and eventually evaporate.
Porous surfaces
Surfaces such as upholstery, pillows, backpacks, cork, cardboard, cork, or carpeting can quickly trap mercury. When mercury spills on porous materials at a low temperature, it will scatter until it finds a crevice or pore. It becomes difficult to clean and may leave a stain on the surface if not addressed immediately. It might also eventually evaporate if the temperature increases.
The health risks of mercury exposure
Mercury exposure can occur in different ways depending on the form, the type of encounter, how long you are exposed, and the factors of the individual exposed to mercury. If you either ingest, inhale, or touch mercury, then you may begin to show symptoms of mercury poisoning such as:
- Headaches
- Vomiting
- Chest tightness
- Tremors
- Hallucinations
- Muscle weakness
If you notice these symptoms in yourself or an individual exposed to mercury, you must call 999 or go to A&E to receive medical attention immediately.

The ways you can encounter mercury
Mercury is a naturally occurring element that comes in three forms. Each form could inflict mercury poisoning on an individual if the exposure levels are high and if it has been ingested or inhaled. We encounter mercury in our everyday lives in small doses, so unless an individual works in an environment where mercury is present, it is not a concern.
Elemental mercury
This is the most well-known form of mercury with its liquid appearance. When spilt at room temperature, it evaporates and becomes an invisible, odourless vapour. Inhalation risk is the most concerning factor for elemental mercury, as it can be absorbed into your bloodstream and cause neurological damage.
Organic mercury (Methylmercury)
Methylmercury is a naturally occurring form passed through fish, shellfish, and some poultry we consume. When ingested in large amounts for some time, it will eventually be absorbed into the bloodstream, passing the blood-brain barrier.
Inorganic mercury
Present most naturally in coal, mercury is released into the environment when burned. It can also be released into the air if a product like a fluorescent lamp or a mercury battery is recycled incorrectly. This poses the most risk to those who work in industrial or recycling settings.
