Emergency Mercury Spillage Cleaning

We’re fully equipped to handle all your chemical spill cleaning needs Lydd.

We guarantee an excellent level of service and outstanding results every time.

Mercury is an element that presents itself in three forms: elemental, inorganic, and organic mercury. The most likely forms you may encounter are either elemental mercury or methylmercury — the most toxic forms.

Elemental is a more well-known form due to its silvery and liquid appearance, previously used in thermometers and barometers. When mercury spills, you could be at risk of inhaling toxic vapours. You must act quickly and contact a specialist cleaning company.

Here at ICE Cleaning, we provide various industrial cleaning services, including emergency chemical spills such as mercury. Our team can be on-site within a few hours in an emergency and respond quickly to any call they may receive. We are available 24/7, 365 days a year, including bank holidays.

Get in touch today at either 0208 066 0360 or enquiries@icecleaning.co.uk to discover the full range of cleaning services available for customers in Lydd.

What are the types of mercury?

There are three forms that mercury can occur in, and each will have different effects on the human body upon interacting with it.

Elemental mercury

This is the most well-known form of mercury, recognised for its metallic and liquid appearance. Up until the mid-2000s, it was used widely in thermometers and barometers. Today it is present in some fluorescent light bulbs, electrical switches, backlights, and batteries. If it spills at room temperature, it evaporates into an odourless, invisible vapour.

Organic mercury (Methylmercury)

This form of mercury occurs when combined with carbon, which allows it to manifest in water and soil. Various fish, shellfish, and poultry will consume these compounds and pass them on through the food chain. This is one of the most common ways humans could encounter mercury, albeit in small and harmless doses.

Inorganic mercury

When mercury combines with elements like oxygen or sulphur, it forms compounds and salt. These can occur naturally in the environment, making it a preferred material for industrial uses — including cosmetics.

What should you do after mercury exposure?

After mercury exposure, you need to remove yourself from the vicinity immediately to prevent any further risk to your health. If you have mercury on your skin, you must remove any contaminated clothing and wash the affected area. You should do this with lukewarm, soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes and contact 111 for further advice.

If you have inhaled or ingested mercury, you must seek advice from 111 for further steps. You may begin to show symptoms following a mercury exposure, and if this happens you must dial 999 or attend A&E. The following symptoms could make themselves known after exposure:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach or chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headaches
  • Fever
  • Tremor
  • Fatigue
  • Skin and eye irritation

What should you do when mercury spills?

In the event of a mercury spill, you must prioritise your safety first and evacuate. Do not try to clean the spill or vacuum up any mercury remains yourself. What you should do instead is:

  • Raise the alarm and evacuate
  • Put up signs to warn people
  • Wear a mask or gloves if you must re-enter the area
  • Ventilate the room via door or window access to the outside
  • Close any doors leading to other areas of the property
  • If you are qualified to use a mercury spill kit, only do so with proper PPE
  • Leave the area immediately
  • Contact emergency cleaning services
