Qualified Mercury Spillage Cleaning

If you require a professional mercury spillage cleaning company in Sheerness, look no further.

We’re on hand for all businesses and customers in Sheerness and can be on-site in a few hours.

The most common type of mercury exposure is in the form of a spillage of elemental mercury. Because of its heavy liquid form, it is more likely to spill and lead to evaporation depending on the room temperature.

The warmer it is, the quicker it evaporates and becomes an invisible, odourless toxic vapour. These spills are more likely to occur in industrial environments, so workers must be fully aware of their health and safety regulations.

When a spill occurs, ICE Cleaning's specialists can arrive on-site in a matter of hours in an emergency. We use industrial-grade tools and solutions to tackle a mercury spill, effectively containing and decontaminating an affected site.

Before a mercury spill cleaning, we test the air purity for levels of mercury and assess the site. These factors allow us to create an effective plan of action, and we will make the environment a safe place to occupy.

Is mercury a natural element?

Mercury is a naturally occurring element often found in the Earth's crust. There are three forms: elemental, organic, and inorganic. Mercury is produced in cinnabar and livingstone ores, sometimes appearing red when extracted. Although global mercury mining operations have slowed since the mid-1900s, countries like Kyrgyzstan and China still allow it.

There have been strict regulations since 2006, where some products are banned, and mercury alternatives are a top priority. The process is ongoing, but the Minamata Convention is pushing this along.

What does mercury do to the body?

Since mercury is naturally occurring, we will encounter it regularly. These low-level exposures happen through consuming fish, shellfish, and some contaminated vegetables — but these are often no cause for alarm.

However, if an individual experiences chronic mercury exposure, there could be severe effects on the body. There are a few factors that play into these effects including:

  • The age and health status of the individual
  •  The interaction with mercury — ingested, inhaled, or touched
  • The exposure levels
  • The duration of the exposure
  • The type of mercury

The most lethal forms of mercury are organic mercury (methylmercury) and elemental mercury. When exposed to large amounts of these types, you may experience a set of symptoms like:

  • Coughing
  • Chest pain
  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Headaches
  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

If you start showing these symptoms, contact 999 or attend A&E immediately because these are the early signs of mercury poisoning. Without proper treatment, these symptoms could escalate into deadly consequences.

What to do when mercury spills

When mercury spills, you must limit contact and wear PPE if you need to use a mercury spill kit to contain it. Do not try to clean it yourself, as you could exacerbate it and only release more vapours into the air. Instead, follow these steps and contact a professional cleaning company:

Raise the alarm

Everyone in the area must be alerted to a spill so that evacuation can commence. Close, label, and barricade any doors that lead to other indoor rooms to minimise spread.

Wear PPE

If you need to enter the area to contain the spill with a mercury kit, you must do so with gloves and a mask. Do not linger around the mercury for too long, or you could be at risk of inhaling toxic vapours.

Ventilate the area

Open any windows and doors that lead directly to the outside. Do not turn on ventilation equipment that shares a vent with another room, as you may spread the vapours.
