Mercury Spillage Cleaning Professionals

Based in the Southeast of England, we’re on hand around the clock for customers in Tonbridge.

With years of experience in the mercury spillage cleaning sector, we’re on hand to deal with all your cleaning needs in Tonbridge.

Mercury is a naturally occurring element in the Earth's crust, often found in ores like cinnabar. Due to our excessive use and mining of mercury, it is now present in other forms in the environment. We encounter mercury at low levels throughout our lifetime, and even though chronic exposures are rare, there is still a risk.

When we consume large predatory fish and shellfish, we ingest organic mercury. Elemental mercury, often present in electronic and measuring devices, can spill and becomes a toxic vapour that causes significant harm to humans.

In the event of a spill, severe or small, you must prioritise your safety first and evacuate the area. Those who are elderly or are young children should be put first during an evacuation to minimise mercury poisoning on vulnerable people. At ICE Cleaning, our technicians understand the urgency when mercury spills, and we can contain, clean, and decontaminate an area.

With years of experience in the mercury spillage cleaning sector, we’re on hand to deal with all your cleaning needs in Tonbridge.

The safety of our clients is our top priority, and we put your needs first in any cleaning process. Our technicians will wear PPE for the entire job and use modern technology combined with industrial-grade solutions to tackle a mercury spill. We conduct a site survey, where the air is tested for mercury levels, and we assess the spill size.

With all the information collected from the survey, our expert cleaners should be able to take the appropriate steps to contain and clean the mercury spill. Our technicians and friendly service team will answer any questions you may have when we arrive on-site.

We test the air purity once more before we leave to ensure that any mercury vapours have dissipated. We cannot leave the site until we are sure it is safe for you to occupy again.

How do we encounter mercury?

Because mercury is a naturally occurring element, we can encounter it at low levels in various ways. Therefore, you will not have to worry about experiencing mercury poisoning, but long-term acute exposure could still cause harm to the body.

Dental fillings

Recent dental procedures have either completely removed or reduced their use of mercury dental amalgams, but there is still a small risk of acute exposure.

Consuming fish

Methylmercury occurs organically in oceans, and therefore ingested by large predatory fish and shellfish. Consuming quantities of these fish over a long period of time could cause mercury poisoning.

Glass thermometers

The government have phased these out of general retail stores. However, these can still be found in antique stores, charity shops, and boot fairs. Elemental mercury is crucial in these measurement devices, and you might inhale the vapours if it breaks.

Fluorescent and energy-saving bulbs

Even though these bulbs are a better alternative to devices that consume large amounts of electricity, they unfortunately contain elemental mercury. Inside the bulb is phosphor powder and traces of mercury, and breaking the glass could lead to you inhaling mercury vapour.

What to do when you encounter mercury exposure

You must act fast when mercury spills and prioritise the lives of children, pets, or elderly individuals. Do not try to clean mercury yourself, and keep your distance as the vapours will be in the air. If you must re-enter the area, only do so with gloves and a mask.

Alert

Raise the alarm and make everyone aware of the new dangers present caused by mercury exposure. Ensure all vulnerable individuals evacuate first.

Ventilate

Close any doors leading to other rooms to minimise the spread. Open windows and doors that lead to the outside, but do not turn on any ventilation equipment. Doing this could spread the vapours across the building.

Wear PPE

If you have a mercury spill kit or are qualified to contain a spill, you must do so with the proper equipment. Ensure you have respiratory protection and gloves to minimise contact with the element.

Evacuate

Once you have evacuated vulnerable people and contained the spill, you must leave the area and barricade the door. Put up appropriate signage to warn everyone else of the dangers in the room. Contact a professional cleaning company qualified to contain, clean, and decontaminate a spill.
