What is the difference between mould and mildew?
Mildew and mould share many similarities, making it difficult to distinguish between the two. However, there are some key differences in how they look.
Mould usually has a black, green and slimy appearance, and can easily be mistaken for dirt. The surface of the mould is often darker and can have a fuzzy texture.
Mildew, on the other hand, is white or grey in colour and can turn brown over time. It has a powdery appearance and looks like small dots without any texture. This is a type of surface fungus that can be eliminated early and is considered an initial indication of mould development.
Mould exposure can cause long-term health problems
The fungus is dangerous to inhale, ingest and touch. Symptoms associated with mould exposure include:
- Skin irritation
- Lung damage
- Nasal congestion
- Nausea
- Throat irritation
- Dizziness
People with pre-existing respiratory and skin conditions or a weakened immune system should be particularly careful when around mould.
