Why does mould grow in grout and silicone?
Grout and silicone are particularly vulnerable to mould outbreaks as they tend to get wet frequently, either through splashing or condensation.
You can easily spot mould growth by the appearance of black, blue, green or pink spots on grout and silicone, or if they appear faded or discoloured.
Grout is a porous material made from water, cement and sand, which makes it highly absorbent and slow to dry out, providing the ideal breeding ground for mould.
Although silicone sealant may be waterproof, moisture can still penetrate through cracks and crevices, causing mould to grow behind the sealant and eventually spread to the silicone.
