How to prevent mould from growing
Control Indoor Humidity:
- Use a dehumidifier to keep the indoor humidity levels under 60%, with an ideal range between 30-50%.
- Proper ventilation is crucial in bathrooms, kitchens and basements. Install exhaust fans or open windows during and after activities that generate moisture, like cooking and showering.
Address Leaks and Water Intrusion:
- Repair any leaks in your roof, plumbing, or foundations promptly.
- Ensure proper drainage around your home to prevent water from accumulating near the foundation.
Use Exhaust Fans: Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove excess moisture from the air.
Insulate and Ventilate:
- Properly insulate walls, windows and pipes to prevent condensation.
- Ensure your home is well-ventilated as good air circulation keeps moisture levels balanced.
Seal Windows and Doors: Repair gaps or cracks around windows and doors to prevent water infiltration, especially during rainy or humid weather.
Use Mold-Resistant Products: Use mould-resistant paints and sealants in areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens during renovation.
Clean and Dry Thoroughly:
- Promptly clean and dry areas that become wet or damp. Use towels or a wet-dry vacuum to remove standing water, and dry thoroughly.
- Clean and disinfect areas prone to moisture, like shower curtains, tiles and grout, on a regular basis.
Reduce Clutter: Reduce clutter in damp areas like basements and closets to promote air circulation.
Store Items Properly: Store clothing, linens and other items in well-ventilated areas and use moisture catchers if necessary.
Monitor Indoor Plants: Avoid overwatering indoor plants as overly moist soil can promote mould growth.
Inspect HVAC Systems: Regularly inspect and maintain your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to ensure proper airflow and prevent the spread of mould.
Use Exhaust Vents: Use exhaust vents when using appliances like clothes dryers to direct moisture outside.
Keep Gutters Clean: Regularly clean gutters to ensure rainwater is directed away from the house rather than accumulating on the roof or foundation.
Use Mould-Resistant Building Materials: When building or renovating consider using mould-resistant drywall and insulation.
