What is mould?
Mould is a common fungal growth that occurs both outside and inside, and often grows in our homes' damp, dark corners. The UK provides an excellent climate for mould, and it can grow at any time of the year, but it is most prevalent during colder seasons.
When mould matures, it produces airborne spores that are invisible to the naked eye, and it spreads to seek out suitable areas to grow. Mould requires damp, warmth and organic materials to feed off.
Due to its prevalence in nature, mould is difficult to remove once it starts growing on your property, often requiring professional remediation.
What causes mould to grow?
Mould grows in your home when there are high levels of humidity and moisture, and a lack of or poor ventilation. This is usually the case in kitchens and bathrooms where there is a consistent amount of warmth and moisture present.
Water damage may also lead to mould growth, such as a leaky roof, burst pipe or poor plumbing structure. Mould thrives in dark environments with a consistent source of water, and it can even occur in places where you cannot see it, like behind your wallpaper or under your carpet.
