There are lots of different types of mould that can grow in the home, including toxic moulds.
- Cladosporium: This is one of the most common types of indoor mould in the UK. It can appear as green, brown or black spots and grows on damp materials like wood, fabric and wallpaper.
- Penicillium: This blue-green mould grows on various organic materials, including food, wallpaper and carpets.
- Aspergillus: Aspergillus mould can come in various species, some of which are known to produce mycotoxins that are harmful to human health. It often appears as yellow or greenish mould.
- Alternaria: Alternaria mould is black or dark green and typically grows on damp areas like shower curtains, windows and wallpaper.
- Stachybotrys (Black Mold): This type of mould is notorious for its dark black or greenish-black appearance and is often associated with water damage, such as leaks and flooding.
- Fusarium: Fusarium mould can vary in colour, from pink to white or red. It usually grows on water-damaged carpeting, wallpaper and cotton materials.
- Trichoderma: Trichoderma mould is usually white or green and can grow on damp materials like wallpaper, carpet and wooden surfaces.
- Ulocladium: This mould is black and often found in areas with persistent moisture, such as basements and bathrooms.
- Aureobasidium (Pink Mould): This mould can be pink or brown and is frequently found on window frames, caulking and painted surfaces exposed to high humidity.
Some of these moulds - Stachybotrys and certain species of Aspergillus - can produce mycotoxins that may have adverse health effects when ingested, inhaled or touched.
