When oil spills, regardless of where it has leaked from, it can be an incredibly stressful incident to deal with. Oil is a toxic substance to humans, animals, and the environment — it is also flammable and could leave long-lasting damage. In the event of a spill, it is imperative that you act quickly and only contain the oil if it is safe for you and if you are qualified.

We offer fast and effective oil spill cleaning services at ICE Cleaning. Our expert technicians have undergone specialist training and can deal with various situations like soil contamination and water decontamination.

Our technicians will arrive in full PPE and conduct a survey per health and safety. We always prioritise our customer’s safety whilst ensuring that all hazards are removed before we leave — including any waste. Our cleaners will remove all hazardous substances off-site to dispose of them correctly, and remain until you are happy with the job.

The process and cost of the job may change depending on the size of the spill and the conclusions drawn from our site survey.

Our solutions include using modern technology to extract all the site’s oil and chemical treatments to remove all traces. At the end of a clean, our technicians will use the TORIK Cleaning system and thoroughly decontaminate the affected area.

How does a domestic oil spill occur?

Some homes, especially in rural areas, are more likely to use their heating oil tanks to keep their homes warm. These tanks are incredibly vulnerable to leaks, accidental damage, and poor maintenance. Due to the area where these spills can occur, the environment is at risk and could even affect local drinking water.

If you own a heating oil tank, you must maintain it properly or consider more clean energy sources to keep your local environment safe. You should check your tank regularly and give it a general inspection to spot any leaks early on. You will know that your tank is leaking if:

  • The fuel level has dropped significantly over a short period
  • You are detecting the smell of hot or burning oil around your property
  • Taste oil in your drinking water
  • You notice oily residue around your tank or in the local soil
  • There is discoloured or dead vegetation around the oil tank

When your tank spills oil, you must contact your local council, your insurance company, local water service providers, and a professional oil spill cleaning company. Because the oil tank is on your property, you are responsible for containing the spill and repairing it immediately.

What are the health risks of an oil spill?

Oil spills can harm the environment and cause people in the area to suffer from short and long-term health effects. Inhaling, ingesting, or touching exposed oil after a spill is dangerous. If you suspect you may be experiencing side effects of exposure to oil, you should seek medical attention by calling 111.

What should you do when oil spills?

If an oil spill occurs near you or your domestic heating oil tank starts leaking, you must first protect yourself. Ideally, if you are qualified and it is safe, you should try to contain the spill with absorbents like sand or cat litter. Otherwise, you must keep your distance and follow these steps:

  • Avoid the area if you see or smell oil
  • Do not touch the oil
  • Wash any oil off your skin with warm and soapy water
  • Remove any soiled clothing immediately
  • Alert your local authorities to the spill and any locals nearby
  • Contact 111 if you start to show short-term symptoms
  • Call 999 or go to A&E if you develop severe symptoms
